Corylus avellana, or native Hazel, is a versatile, fast-growing shrub that thrives in understory shade and mixed hedgerows. It brings early life to the landscape with its pendulous yellow 'lambs-tail' catkins in late winter, providing early pollen for bees. By autumn, it yields delicious edible hazelnuts (cobnuts) beloved by squirrels, dormice, and humans alike.
