Carpinus betulus, or Hornbeam, closely resembles Beech but is far more resilient in heavy clay, damp, or frost-prone soils. It forms a dense, architectural hedge with heavily ribbed, bright green leaves that turn a beautiful golden-yellow in autumn. Like beech, it retains many of its brown leaves over winter, providing excellent privacy and wind protection.
