Common Alder is a hardy native tree that thrives in wet ground and alongside rivers, ponds and wetlands. Its ability to improve soil through nitrogen fixation makes it valuable for woodland creation and habitat restoration. Attractive catkins appear in spring, followed by distinctive cones that provide seasonal interest. Common Alder grows quickly and performs well in most moist soils, making it an excellent choice for conservation and environmental planting.
