Yew is a long lived native evergreen, prized for its dense foliage and exceptional longevity. Its rich green needles provide year round colour and create excellent screening, while the bright red berries produced by female trees are valued by birds. Yew grows well in most well drained soils, including chalk, and thrives in both full sun and shade. It is an excellent choice for formal hedging, woodland planting and landscape schemes.
Plant Yew into well prepared soil and keep weeds under control while establishing. Water during extended dry periods throughout the first growing season. Yew responds well to regular trimming, making it ideal for formal hedging, although it can also be left to develop naturally as a specimen tree. Minimal maintenance is required once established.
